A feminist boutique adult shop owner from Ipswich and an international airline pilot who once starred in the 1980s Australian erotic series, The Down Under Project, will launch their candidacy for the Queensland Senate in Brisbane tomorrow.

Sex Party president, Fiona Patten, will introduce the candidates and the world famous penis painter, Pricasso, will paint a politically charged portrait behind a screen and unveil it at the end of the media conference.

Candidates Desiree Gibson and Tim Sheen (aka Mel Bourne) will speak to the media at the launch which is at the Bleeding Heart Gallery in Brisbane.

Ms Patten said that the party’s Queensland campaign would focus on censorship, abortion, sex education and religion. “Queensland has a tradition of electing maverick Senators”, she said. “There are a lot of people who are fed up with government encroachments on their personal freedoms and who will vote for us this time around”.

She said that Queensland’s censorship laws made it the Nanny state of Australia by denying people the right to view publications and films that were legal in all other states of Australia. “We want a return to the Bjelke Petersen style of censorship”, she said. “Under Joh, public opinion was monitored crudely through the courts and in front of a jury. Now there is no recourse to public opinion.”

She said that sex education in Queensland schools was highly selective and many religious schools that received commonwealth funding refused to even mention sex in their curriculums. “Many Queensland children are growing up with fundamentalist religious attitudes to sex which means they cannot negotiate safe sex and are prime candidates for unwanted teenage pregnancy”, she said.

The Australian Sex Party wants the federal government to implement uniform abortion laws around Australia along with euthanasia laws. “Being born and dying are big issues in life which are fundamentally misunderstood by all state and federal governments because they see life as the opposite of death. Birth is the opposite of death and life is what goes around and through these two issues”, she said. “Until governments are advised on life and death issues by spiritually advanced advisors and not sexually compromised representatives from the Christian churches, these issues will remain a cause for concern in the community”.
